Too FAT to afford! The truth about plus size you probably don't know.
I'm really hoping this doesn't turn into a ranty post but it will be full of these I'm not too comfortable in telling the world. It shouldn't be that way but it is.
In recent years, I would say in the last 2-3 I have been increasingly gaining weight. Mainly due to an under-active Thyroid and anxiety and depression. Well wasn't that a massive truth bomb. Now what with us women supposedly embracing curves and 'the fat £' I shouldn't feel so awful about my size. But I am.
Now I am understanding of my size, I know that I have let exercise and good eating slip on my journey to make myself mentally better, that's fine by me. So why do I feel so crap about myself?
Enter the fashion industry.
I have one simple request from all these big companies. I have to go to a funeral, no black allowed so I am looking for an A-line midi skirt, I'm very open to colour but preferably maroon, brown, suedette, camel, maybe blue. I'm looking to spend under £20.
This should not be a hard ask. If someone asked me to do this task for them I would think I could get in done in ten minutes. You can, but not at a size 18, 20 or 22.
So let's jump on ASOS. This is usually my go to size. So here I've gone to skirts but I haven't chosen a size because I want to do a comparison. There's 590 styles to choose from, nice!
My first search out of the 590 skirts they have is going to be size 8, 10 and 12.
Lucky ladies, they get 496 out of the possible 590 styles!
Now let's play a bit bigger I'm going to go for 20, 22 and 24.
Sorry girls, you can only have 23 of the 590 styles on offer. Within that range you have mainly mini and pencil skirts in one or two colours.
That's me done then, okay let's try Missguided, they always advertise for women my age!
Okay looking good, 754 styles found, awesome. Let's do the same test.
Sizes 8, 10 and 12. They have 632 styles, what an amount of choice!!
Sizes 20, 22 and 24. Ah, this is an issues. We only get 12 styles, only one of which isn't a pencil skirt.
I am seeing a trend here. Now I will be able to buy a skirt at ASOS or Missguided for around £20 but it won't be one I particularly want.
Okay right so I am "plus size" let's have a look at the plus size giant Evans. This should be easy.
NOPE, again I select my sizes and I get all of 16 styles, two of which are £20, both of which are pencil skirts.
So all I can say is I am sorry larger ladies of the land. If you want a choice in clothing you best be able to afford couture of lose 2 stone overnight because I don't have a skirt for the funeral and either way there is a huge lack of choice in the plus size market especially for those on a lower income.
The fashion industry disappoints again.
